Dr. Stephen Ching-kiu ChanTitle: Putting Pedagogy Back into Cultural Studies: The (Un-)Learning of Culture and its Pragmatic Challenges

Dr. Stephen Ching-kiu Chan is Professor of Cultural Studies and Programme Director of the Master of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. He founded the BA Cultural Studies degree in 1999, and served as Department Head in Cultural Studies from 2000 to 2003, teaching practicum in cultural criticism, cultural policy and institution, representation, and critical thinking through popular culture.

Published on Hong Kong culture, film, literature, and cultural studies, Chan runs projects on education, policy and cultural studies, schooling as cultural process, pedagogy as performance, urban creativity and cultural citizenship under the Kwan Fong Cultural Research and Development Programme, of which he is Deputy Coordinator.

His specific areas of interest include pedagogy and Hong Kong action cinema, cultural research and liberal education, urban public culture and policy, and “strangeness” in post-colonial identity formation. Chan is an editorial board member of the journal Cultural Studies, and an advisor to Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, Communication and Society, and Router: A Journal of Cultural Studies.
